Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a ticket?
No, you can simply turn up at one of the starting points on the day – please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time.
Is there a minimum age?
We encourage riders of all ages, whether they ride or scoot independently, or on a seat / in a cargo bike. Please remember that you’ll be responsible for any children with you.
Will there be marshals leading the ride?
Yes, we will have trained ride leaders, marshals and experienced adults who will be positioned at the front, rear and throughout the group of riders. Ride leaders and marshals will help to ensure safety at crossings, on-road sections and in shared-use areas, please follow their instructions at all times. If the group becomes separated at any point due to traffic or crossing roads, marshals will separate accordingly and we’ll reconvene at the next opportunity.
What about the weather?
The ride will go ahead in all but the most extreme weather conditions – please make sure you dress accordingly on the day. In the event that we have to call off the ride, we’ll update our social media channels, so make sure you’re following us!
Does it involve cycling on the road?
Much of our routes are on traffic-free or low-traffic streets, including the seafront shared cycleway NCN1, but on both rides, there is some cycling on the road – it is a protest ride after all! Our ride leaders and marshals help to maintain safety, and we choose the routes carefully to ensure they’re as safe as possible but you are responsible for your own cycling, and any children with you. When cycling on roads, we ask that children cycle to the left of adults.
Can I join en-route?
We generally stop briefly at one additional point on each ride (Edith Street in Tynemouth and The Links in Whitley Bay) to pick up riders who want to join us en-route for a shorter ride. Please ensure you’re at these points by 2:10.
Can I leave the ride before the finish?
Yes of course, but please make sure you let the marshal at the rear of the ride know that you’re leaving us.
Where do the rides finish?
The exact route is still being finalised, but aim for both rides to meet in the Cullercoats area. We’ll update this page with the details as soon as they’re finalised.
How long are the rides?
Each route is under 3 miles, it usually takes around 45 minutes to reach the destination, but we don’t leave any rider behind unless you choose to drop out for any reason.
What happens at the finish?
We’re still finalising details, but we usually gather at the finish to celebrate the Kidical Mass movement, and for people to socialise and play. Depending on the route (and the weather), it may be indoors or outdoors. You’re more than welcome to bring a picnic! Remember to bring bike locks if you’ll need them.
Do you ride back to the start?
No, you will need to plan your own route home.
Where are the closest Metro stations?
As it’s a weekend, you can bring your bikes on the Metro – please check their specific restrictions and allow extra time if you’re bringing multiple bikes with you.
